If you have very good and valuable copy, other sites may link to you because you are a valuable resource. However, if you want to speed this process along you will have to actively request links from other websites, either by trading links or by getting your content (with a link back to your site) placed on other websites.
When it comes to links you should keep in mind one important principle: it is not the quantity of links that is important, but the quality. One good link from an authority site such as CNN or Wikipedia is worth more than dozens of links from other sites. To get these quality links, there is no short cut. So, let us look at some of the basics of getting links that will, quite likely, be the smart way to get links.

First of all, I think that it is not natural to have many sites giving you sitewides. Why would a normal site want to give you a link from all of its pages? Ok, for a coupe of sites there might be some reason, but for the most part it is unnatural. The moral of the story is that, if you buy links, buy them on a specific page, probably the homepage, and not on all pages of a site.

Second, make sure that the sites linking to you are of all types. If your link building campaign revolves only around directory submission, or article marketing, or high PR pages, or the like, search engines might figure it out and lower your value.

Third, make sure that your links are added slowly and not all at once, unless your destination page is newsy. I am not saying that getting a thousand links in a week is too many. But a thousand links in one week and close to no links for the next few weeks might look strange.

Fourth, and this one is well known, make sure that you are not being linked to from a page that is virtually a link farm.

Fifth, ensure that your links look like natural links. How would that be? Well, on the one hand, try to have varying text in the link (this text is called the anchor text). On the other, you can try and get links to the main page as well as to other pages. This will make the links appear “natural.”

Sixth, focus on the topic or theme of the page that is linking to you. Focused links are quite likely more valuable. At the same time do not go overboard with this one. Unrelated links have value too. But the one thing that you should avoid is getting links from pages that link to a lot of “bad” pages. True you cannot control who links to you. But at least avoid knowingly getting links from “bad neighborhoods.”

Finally, stay away from reciprocal linkage. Reciprocal linkage is common in the world of blogs and may not be the poison pills that they are often known to be. All the same make sure that you do not have too many reciprocals. Surely you would not like to have the reputation of a spammer.

This is a slow process and not always reciprocal linking is a good idea, cause search engines place more importance on one-way links than two-way links. Still, it can bring you valorous links, if you have what to exchange with.

3. Build A Network Of Websites And Interlink Them

Building multiple websites is always a good idea, but be careful to host them on different ips, not on the same server, as the search engines will believe you are manipulating their results and will most penalize your sites.

4. Write articles like this one. You can see in the footer my bio-box, that has 3 links. as you see, I am not writing the article for nothing.

5. Build a reciprocal directory
If you build a niche directory related to your site, many people with similar sites to yours will  want to submit a link to it, and, in return, you could ask for a link to your site.

6. Build a theme / template for used scripts

Like WordPress, or phpld. Put in the footer of the theme, your link, as in “Designed by yourlink.com”. If you can’t do one, you could always buy it from people that can. The catch here is to advertise it well.

7. Post on forums that allow you tho have a signature

You won’t get a great deal of of page rank, as most forums do not have a high page rank for their threads, but you will build up a good number of links, and as forums are generally very crowed by search engines, bots will follow the links to your site and and crawl your site on a regular basis.

8. Leave Comments On Blogs And Guest books

Don’t abuse it and start spamming other people’s blogs or guest books. Make comments to the subject, and make it look like you actually have something to contribute.

9. Write Good Testimonials

By writing and submitting testimonials to websites that you have previously purchased products or services from, you can get high-quality links to your site.

This can have a dramatic effect on your page rank and subsequently your search engine rankings if you can get links from PR6+ sites, however the only problem with this is that most links for sale are often for a set period of time, usually a month, and so you have to keep buying them to maintain your higher page rank and rankings.

Description tags help get people to click on your listing. Although your site may be ranked well, it is still up to someone to click on it.   3. Usability– So many times I see pages without a call to action, and I see a lot of calls to action that are mediocre at best. “Add To Cart” and “Fill out this form” are not sufficient. Here are two great ones to use:

Some studies I have seen (and have personally witnessed) show that it increases conversion by 40%. That number is ridiculous….but true. Absolutely nothing drives me crazier (and gets me to unsubscribe to a newsletter, or quit a site, faster) than not being able to read an email or website because I’m on my Android or iPad and not in front of a regular computer with a regular email client.

2. Respect Your Customers’ Differences

Here are a few general things to remember about customers and content consumption.

Platforms vary: You don’t control how the customer gets his content; he does.
Customers expect privacy: Just because you have all of their contact info doesn’t mean you have the right to use it.
Customers’ habits vary: Before you first reach out to a customer, know exactly how they like to receive their information. And think in detail: Getting email on a desktop is a much different experience than on a BlackBerry. There’s a reason text-based emails haven’t gone away.
Go where your customers are: If your audience isn’t where you’re trying to reach them, you won’t reach them. Sounds simple, but way too many companies have yet to figure this out.

It’s great to keep an eye on technology trends, but remember that your customers are more important than the broader population. Two years ago, I had a client tell me, “But everyone will have full html email on all devices in the next year!” But the truth is, some customers still want text-only email. Make sure you have a backup version that will make them happy.

I test out probably close to 30 phones a year, and on each one, I make sure to read a full html email with photos. I’ve yet to find one that looks as great as it does on a laptop or desktop. This doesn’t mean they don’t look “OK,” but OK isn’t good enough when you’re trying to give your audience what they want.
